This scholarship honors the memory of Mr. John Nese whose career at Steubenville Catholic Central spanned three decades and included teaching, coaching, and counseling. From 1963 to 1975, Mr. Nese taught Social Studies while coaching baseball and boys basketball. His basketball squads compiled a record of 120-87, capturing three sectional, three district, and one OVAC title, while his baseball teams went 197-77 overall, winning seven sectional, five district, and one regional title, and finished as state runner-up in 1965. He returned to Catholic Central from 1981 to 1990 as a guidance counselor, and coached the CCHS girls basketball team from 1987 to 1990. In three seasons, his teams were 56-10, winning two sectional and two OVAC titles, and he was twice voted Eastern District Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. All four of Mr. Nese’s children – Jon Michael, Glenn, Kathleen, and Mary – are graduates of Catholic Central.
To qualify, the applicant can be any student attending Steubenville Catholic Central HS, of any class year – freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, whose class attendance is 90% or greater and holds an accumulative grade point average of no less than 3.0. The recipient must demonstrate discipline and an essay explaining the importance of discipline in one’s life, including personal examples of discipline must be submitted with the application or the award to be determined.
A total award of $2,000 will be awarded each year to either two ($1,000) or four students ($500 each). This scholarship is renewable for the student attending Steubenville Catholic Central High School, provided that all criteria is consistently met. In some cases, the full amount may be awarded to a single student.
To apply for the scholarship, applicant must complete the application form, show proof of community volunteerism, show proof of GPA and provide an essay on the importance of discipline in one’s life.
