50 Years of Honoring America at CCHS

Class of ’81 Reunion!

The Class of ’81 celebrated 45 years!

They met Friday night, July 17th at The Spot Bar. On the 18th they met in the school cafeteria. Classmates provided the decorations, a slideshow, the music and a homemade Italian dinner.  They wrapped up our night with DiCarlo’s pizza, the Alma Mater, and The Fight Song.

We were proud to have three Crusaders from the Class of 2026 ( Evelyn Zeigler, Zach Bryan,and Karlie Nese) representCCHS at the 2026 OVAC All Star Game.

Furthermore, Karlie was awarded a $1,000 Scholarship for her leadership and performance in preparation for the big day. Congrats!

 

 

Welcome to our New Volleyball Coach Megan Lloyd (CCHS ’15)!

We welcome Megan for the 2026-2027 school year! She was a standout multi-sport high school athlete in both volleyball and softball. During her high school career, she earned multiple varsity letters and was a member of the 2014 OVAC Championship volleyball team, as well as the 2013, 2014, and 2015 OVAC Championship softball teams.

Coach Lloyd has been coaching with OVVC for the past six years, bringing extensive experience and a passion for developing athletes both on and off the court. She has coached a wide range of age groups and skill levels within the club, highlighted by leading the 16U team to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship tournament earlier this summer. In recognition of her dedication and impact, she was named OVVC Coach of the Year in 2025.

In addition to her club coaching experience, Coach Lloyd spent one season coaching volleyball at CCHS and served as an assistant volleyball coach at Bethany College. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes character, resilience, confidence, and creating a positive environment where athletes can grow as players and individuals.

Outside of volleyball, Coach Lloyd is a speech-language pathologist at Trinity Health System in Steubenville, where she is dedicated to helping others communicate and succeed every day!

Coming to Lanman Hall This Summer | Arsenic & Old Lace 

 

There’s drama at CCHS this summer….

 

Our thespians are putting on a production of the classic tale of family ties, murder, madness, and mayhem, Arsenic & Old Lace  by Joseph Kesserling!

This is a student led production, directed by sisters Adeline Moore (’26), and her sister, Catherine Moore (’28)!

 

If you are in town – don’t miss your chance to experience this comedy on Saturday August 8th at 7:00 PM or Sunday August 9th at 3:00 PM (or both!). Admission is $5 at the door – which is a bargain for high culture – so mark your calendar and we will look forward to seeing you!

Crusader Heritage – Patrick Hanus, BJKM Principal

 

 

Patrick Hanus was raised in Richmond, Illinois, but is no stranger to the Ohio Valley and our Steubenville Catholic Schools. He student taught at All Saints while earning his Bachelors in Education from Franciscan University before moving on to earn his Masters in Educational Leadership from Western New Mexico Univ. He served as BJKM’s Vice Principal for the 2025-2026 academic year, and is stepping into the role of Principal this fall.

Patrick and his wife Christine have five children and been further blessed with 12 grandchildren. He lists his favorite activities as spending time with family, mountain biking, golfing, tennis, off-roading, and sitting with the Lord in adoration.

We interviewed Patrick so you can get to know him as he takes the helm at BJKM!

 

 

What inspired you to accept the role at BJKM as Vice Principal? 

After living here for four years as a college student and being married here, my wife and I have lived in several places around the country. In some ways, coming to Steubenville was like moving back to our hometown. Plus, one of our children settled here and it was centrally located to our other children and their families. My wife and I are huge team players, and it is a blast to be on a strong Catholic team here at the school and in our parish.

What inspired you / how did you feel the call to work in Catholic education?  

While in high school I had a passion for evangelism but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I graduated. I chose to pursue a degree in elementary education at Franciscan University though I had my doubts as to whether I really wanted to be a teacher. I enjoyed my classes, and my field experience at Aquinas was positive, but student teaching under Candy Humienny (CCHS ’67) at All Saints my senior year was a turning point. I felt called to work in Catholic education. After graduating from Franciscan University my wife and I taught at a Catholic school in Managua, Nicaragua and that is where I fell in love with teaching. I have taught and have had administrative experience at the elementary, middle-school, and high school levels and found it to be such a good fit and such a blessing to me.

What has been the most rewarding and inspiring part of your experience at the Steubenville Catholic Schools thus far?

There is nothing like working alongside the BJKM faculty and staff who embrace the mission and vision of Catholic education.Coming into a new work environment can be challenging; however, since day one I have felt welcomed by the entire BJKM community.

I am blessed to be part of a school that has an educational program like HOPE. Most Catholic schools don’t have the funding or the staff to make something like our HOPE program possible. HOPE students enrich our school, and it makes my day to interact with these special children.Welcoming students in the morning is also right up there at the top of my list.  I want every student when they get out of the car to feel loved by God and by us, the staff. After raising my own children, I understand the deep love and concern parents have for their children’s well-being. As parents and grandparents are dropping off their precious cargo, I want them to know their children are in good hands.

What are the most important things a Catholic school must do to give their students the best education and character formation?

Where do I begin on this one? What makes a Catholic school stand out is its approach to educating the whole child. The Catholic school helps parents to form their child spiritually, intellectually, physically, psychologically, socially, and morally. This is a huge responsibility and it is only with God’s grace that we can do it. With God’s grace, beautiful things are possible.

Attending Mass as a school is a fantastic recalibration for both students and our faculty and staff and the grace that comes from Mass can’t be measured. Praying with students and teaching them how to pray in the classroom and throughout the school day is indispensable.

Students are always looking at adults in the school for guidance and adults can be a great force for good. It is vitally important that we are authentic Christian witnesses to our students and that we foster a love of learning.

What are the strengths of our BJKM faculty and how have you seen them help our children learn and grow?

I have witnessed impressive dedication and care for the students, day in and day out. It is their faith in Jesus that motivates our teachers to approach life and teach with an eternal perspective. Everyone knows that Catholic school teachers make less than public school teachers, but our teachers want to be at BJKM and it shows.

I have been nearly moved to tears to witness the way teachers speak to the children with tenderness and compassion. This approach goes a long way and creates a receptiveness in students for academic learning and growth in virtue.

What impact has the new Legacy Hall made on BJKM and how does it help us live out our mission?

I am amazed how the school community has rallied together to bring about Legacy Hall. It is clear to me that in this community, if you have something special to offer such as a building project like Legacy Hall, people can and will get behind it.

Nothing resonates like Jesus’ words, “Let the children come unto me,” and Legacy Hall is all about connecting children to Christ and to his plan for their lives.

Witnessing first hand on a daily basis the learning taking place in the updated new classrooms is inspiring. Thank you to all those who have donated your time, financial assistance, and prayers!  If you have yet to see the great things going on in Legacy Hall let me know, and I (or Vice Principal DiMarzo) would love to give you a personal tour!

What areas are you excited about for BJKM to grow in?

I am very excited about picking up where Principal Danaher has left off. What an honor and privilege it is to be the principal here at Bishop John King Mussio Elementary! As a principal, I have drawn on my experience as a father and now a grandfather to walk with families on their journey of educating their children. Helping students, faculty, and staff to develop and grow in knowledge, wisdom, and virtue, both as individuals and together as the Body of Christ–there is nothing more exciting.

School improvement in the areas of academics and catechesis need to be ongoing. There is always room for growth and improvement.

This past year we decided we will be changing our math curriculum, so identifying a new math curriculum will be a priority for the upcoming year.

I am looking forward to seeing the school use the new virtues program we implemented at the end of last year. It is put out by the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist, and it is a beautiful program.

In our travels over recent years, my wife and I have seen young families open to life, churches growing, and school enrollment going up. There are many parents and grandparents who want their children/grandchildren to attend schools where truth is not relative–schools that are not Catholic in name only. BJKM is such a school, and I intend to preserve and foster our Catholic identity.

What else do you want our Steubenville Catholic School Alumni to know?

When I meet with prospective parents who are considering enrolling their children as students, I will ask them, “Why are you considering Catholic schools?”  After they provide their reason(s), I will then get up on my soapbox and share with them why I am sold out for Catholic education. I often tell them, “We are a Catholic school whose goal is to help parents raise their children to be saints (and then I’ll give an example like young St. Carlo Acutis).” When you have something that is good, true, and beautiful, you want to invite students and their families and the surrounding community to be part of it as well.

I would like any alumni to know they are always welcome to come back and visit the school to see all the wonderful things the students are learning and doing here at Bishop Mussio. Our veteran teacher and now assistant principal, Jen DiMarzo (CCHS ’94) and I would love to be able to show you around the school.

Raising children in today’s culture is tough and at times overwhelming. If we don’t make those–sometimes hard– decisions to raise our children up in the ways of God, society (Tik Tok and Youtube) will gladly take the wheel from us. Our BJKM families are trying very, very hard to raise their children well. I would like to ask alumni to please pray for our students and our school families. Please consider praying a rosary, or a decade of the rosary daily for God to help provide for the needs of all the faculty and staff who make sacrifices to serve the Lord in Catholic education. Prayer makes such a difference, and we need you on our team so that, together, we can carry out our God-given mission.
